economy

Agriculture and especially viticulture have always played an important role in the Charente villages. While cereals, vegetables and oilseeds ( sunflowers ) were mainly grown for their own needs, one could earn good money with the export of wine (later also brandy) to England, Scotland and other countries in Northern Europe, although the winegrowers with the less Part of the earnings had to be satisfied. Today the south bank of the Charente near Éraville is part of the Petite Champagne location within the large growing area for cognac wines.

history

No information is available on the history of Éraville. It is believed that a Roman road from Saintes ( Mediolanum Santonum ) to Périgueux ( Vesunna ) passed here.

Attractions

  • The Romanesque parish church of Saint-Pierre probably dates from the end of the 12th century. It impresses with a three-part facade with a high bell gable . The ground floor is divided into three fields by two vertical services : the middle one is occupied by a Gothic portal that was added a little later and that - as is usual in the Charente - has no tympanum ; the left field contains a smaller Romanesque dazzling portal . The ground floor closes at the top with a figural console frieze on which a cornice with a block frieze rests. The middle floor was formed by a five-arcade - resting on double columns - with a window embedded in the raised central arch; the outer arcades have largely disappeared when side buttresses were added . The middle floor closes with a simple, undecorated cornice; above it is a soaring pseudo gable. Between the two bell arcades, of which the left one was later walled up, there is a console with a barely recognizable figure - possibly the church patron St. Peter. The interior of the church has a single nave and is barrel vaulted with an apse . Church construction has been included in the list of historical monuments since 1965 . The bronze bell dates from 1857 and is also a listed building.
  • In the village itself, the town hall, the former school, is a listed building; In the vicinity of the village there are several farmhouses ( fermes ) from the 19th century, which are also of historical importance.
