Étienne Hajdú (actually: István Hajdú ; born August 12, 1907 in Torda , then Transylvania , Austria-Hungary ; † March 24, 1996 in Bagneux near Paris , France ) was a French sculptor and relief artist of Hungarian descent. He was an important exponent of abstract art after the Second World War .

life and work

Étienne Hajdú was born to Hungarian parents in the Transylvanian Torda ( Romanian : Turda ). He attended the Technical School of Decorative Arts in Ujpest, today Budapest, in the wood sculpture department from 1923 to 1925 and in 1926 for three months at the art school in Vienna . In October 1927 he moved to Paris . In the same year he became a student in the life drawing course of Antoine Bourdelle at the Académie de la Grande Chaumière for six months . He then attended Niclausse 's École des arts décoratifs until 1929. He received French citizenship in 1930 and completed his military service in 1931/1932. In 1930 he met Fernand Léger , who will have a lasting impact on his art. He befriends Maria Helena Vieira da Silva and Arpad Szenes , with whom he exhibited together in 1939 at the Jeanne Bucher Gallery in Paris. In 1936 he traveled to the Netherlands to get to know Piet Mondrian's country . In 1939 he traveled to Greece and Crete and gained impressions of the Mycenaean - Cretan art of antiquity.

After serving in the military in 1939 and 1940, he worked in a marble quarry in Bagnères de Bigorre until the liberation of France in 1944 . Between 1950 and 1951, Étienne Hajdú built his own house and studio in Bagneux near Paris, where he lived and worked until his death.

After regular exhibitions in the Jeanne Bucher Gallery in Paris from 1946 to 1958, his art received international recognition. In 1958 he exhibited at the Knœdler Gallery in New York City , then in Germany in 1961 at the Kestner Society in Hanover . Étienne Hajdú exhibited in Krefeld in 1959 together with Alicia Penalba in the Museum Haus Lange and in 1973 with Juana Muller and Baltasar Lobo in the Musées de Metz in Luxembourg . In 1959 he was a participant in documenta 2 and in 1964 also in documenta 3 in Kassel in the plastic department . In 1969 he was awarded the Grand prix de sculpture .

Hajdu's grave is in the Thiais cemetery near Paris.
