The company refines natural gas into high-quality raw materials for agriculture and industry; the main products are melamine , urea , synthetic resins , artificial fertilizers , ammonia and nitric acid .
Locations
The main location of Borealis Agrolinz Melamine GmbH is in the Linz Chemical Park , where numerous other companies in the chemical industry, such as Borealis Polyolefine , Patheon , ESIM , Nufarm and Takeda, are in the immediate vicinity . Another location is in Piesteritz ( Germany ).
history
- In 1938, shortly after Austria was annexed to the German Reich , the groundbreaking ceremony for the Upper Danube iron works on the eastern edge of Linz.
- On July 5, 1939, to the north of the steelworks, the "nitrogen works Ostmark AG" was founded. A core product is 26% ammonium nitrate (with lime, brand name (later) Nitramoncal 26% ) as a nitrogen fertilizer for agriculture. Ammonia is oxidized to nitric acid, ammonia and nitric acid are neutralized to form ammonium nitrate, thickened with lime dust under vacuum and granulated while hot in rotating drums . For ammonia synthesis, nitrogen from the air separation according to Linde (the oxygen sometimes goes into the steelworks) and hydrogen from the coking plant of the steelworks are required .
- The operation of the steel mill was stopped on May 5, 1945 at the end of the war .
- On April 6, 1946, the company was renamed “Österreichische Nitrogen Works AG” and taken over by the Republic of Austria on July 26, 1946 ( Nationalization Act ).
- In 1973 the company was renamed "Chemie Linz AG", and a year later the construction of a second large plant in Enns began.
- In the late 1980s, due to its poor earnings and financial situation, the company outsourced corporate divisions as subsidiaries (Chemie Linz, Agrolinz , CL Pharma), and Chemie Holding AG was formed as a bracket.
- In 1990 Austrian Industries AG sold Chemie Holding to ÖMV AG , and Chemie Holding acquired the melamine company Ausind SpA in Italy , which operated under the name Chemie Linz Italia (Castellanza) Srl until 1994 (today: Agrolinz Melamin Italia Srl). The Norwegian group Hafslund Nycomed took over 55% of CL Pharma AG (1991: 100%)
- In 1991 Chemie Holding AG was converted into a GmbH and merged with Chemie Linz Ges.mbH; “Agrolinz Agrarchemischem Ges.mbH” is therefore a wholly owned subsidiary of Chemie Linz Ges.mbH, which acted as the lead company for the chemistry division of ÖMV AG.
- In 1993 Agrolinz Agrarchem Nahrungsmittel Ges. Mb H. was merged with Chemie Linz Ges.mbH as the receiving company.
- In 1994, Chemie Linz was renamed Agrolinz Melamin GmbH after the “Fine Chemicals” sub-operation was spun off into Chemie Linz GmbH.
- In 1996 the Dutch group DSM NV bought Chemie Linz GmbH (formerly the fine chemicals division) and renamed it “DSM Chemie Linz GmbH” or “DSM Fine Chemicals” (1999).
- In 2003 Agrolinz Melamin GmbH was renamed AMI Agrolinz Melamine International GmbH .
- In 2005 OMV sold 50% of its shares to IPIC , which itself has a 17.6% stake in OMV.
- Two people were killed and another worker was seriously injured in a serious explosion in the area of the ammonia plant.
- The rumors of sales intensified in 2007 that OMV and IPIC want to sell their 50% shares each to Borealis. (IPIC owns 65% and OMV 35% of Borealis.)
- On February 14, 2007 at around 1.30 p.m. , a fire with heavy smoke development broke out in the NPK (Odda) facility.
- At the beginning of March 2007 it was announced that the melamine production in Castellanza (Italy) will be closed.
- On June 18, 2007, representatives of AMI in Vienna City Hall, in the presence of Federal Chancellor Alfred Gusenbauer, presented the Schweighofer Innovation Prize (endowment: 25,000 euros) for wood products for the joint project between AMI and the Kompetenzzentrum Holz GmbH (Wood Kplus) for "Hiperwood - Extrudable Wood-thermoset composite material based on melamine "accepted.

Shift work
The Linz plant works around the clock in eight-hour shifts. The so-called 5-shift system is used in Linz.
When the shift changes, numerous so-called “shift buses” run from the Chemiepark bus stop to the surrounding communities in Linz, although non-employees can get on and off at the bus stops, several of which are already in Linz.
