Location of Piesteritz in Saxony-Anhalt

Piesteritz is a district of Lutherstadt Wittenberg in Saxony-Anhalt .

history

The name of the place comes from the Slavic word Bystrica (rapid brook). From this the names Byschderitz – Bysteritz – Piesteritz developed.

Around 1870 the village had 140 inhabitants.

At the end of the 19th / beginning of the 20th century, several large industrial companies emerged in the village, such as the Gummiwerk (now Gummiwerk Elbe GmbH) in 1898 and the Reichsstickstoffwerke (now SKW nitrogenwerke Piesteritz GmbH ) in 1915 .

The nitrogen plant in particular has made Piesteritz an important industrial location. During the British naval blockade of Germany in World War I , calcium cyanamide had to be produced as a fertilizer instead of the precipitating Chile nitrate . That is why the plant was built within 9 months. It has grown steadily over the decades. The Agro-Chemie Park Piesteritz, a settlement of more than 30 companies, has been located on the factory premises since 2005.

On July 1, 1950, Piesteritz was incorporated into Lutherstadt Wittenberg.

Piesteritz factory settlement

The Piesteritzer Werksiedlung is the largest car-free housing estate in Germany. From 1916 to 1919 the garden city was built according to plans by Paul Schmitthenner and Otto Rudolf Salvisberg for around 2000 employees of the adjacent nitrogen works.

It was included in the GDR's list of monuments in 1986 and has been a listed building since then . The Piesteritz factory settlement was completely renovated as an expo project in 2000. The original character of the settlement and the uniform design of the houses were preserved.

The complex consists of 363 terraced houses or slightly larger single-family houses. There was also a Catholic church, town hall (today Lucas-Cranach-Gymnasium), department and club house “Feierabend” (2010: Hotel Piesteritzer Hof), school and the ladies' home, in which the unmarried secretaries used to live.

There was an exhibition on the history of the settlement in the Piesteritzer Hof, which has not existed since around 2015. On the initiative of residents, a new exhibition was opened in 2017 in the north-eastern gatehouse.
