geography
Pratau is about 3 km south of the city center on the opposite side of the Elbe in the Elbe and is part of the Middle Elbe Biosphere Reserve of UNESCO .
history
Pratau, first mentioned in a document in 973, was settled by the Germans around the middle of the 1st millennium BC . During the migration period , in the second half of the 6th century, Slavs came via Bohemia , the Erzgebirge passes and then further down the Elbe to the area around the mouth of the Saale . This settlement procession founded the place Pratau at an important Elbe ford. The Slavic place name is derived from the word “Broth” or “Brotha”, which means something like crossing or crossing through the Elbe. In 1513 the spelling of the place name was "Brathow" . The construction of Slavic ramparts in the region can be traced from the 8th century , which could possibly have been triggered by the simultaneous advance of the Franks as far as the Saale. Many of the place names in the area are of Slavic origin.
In the 12th century the Slavs were driven on the defensive by the rural German settlement in the east , in the 13th century Flemings also settled the area.
Around 1200 a provost's office was founded in Pratau , which was moved to Kemberg between 1320 and 1330 due to frequent floods . A field name Propstei on the Elbwiesen still indicates this today.
Wittenberg had been a fortified residence since 1260 at the intersection of two trade routes that ran through Pratau. In 1293 Wittenberg was granted town charter , which meant that the surrounding villages such as Pratau played a not insignificant role in the economic development of the town of Wittenberg. When Frederick the Wise took office in 1486, Wittenberg was further expanded, and Pratau also benefited from the establishment of the university in 1502. It provided the court hunters and the forester.
In the course of time the university became more and more important. After his death, Martin Luther's wife Katharina von Bora had an estate in Wachsdorf, which today belongs to Pratau. A grandson of Lucas Cranach the Elder is buried in the Pratau cemetery. The Seven Years' War brought great damage to Wittenberg and its suburbs.
In 1787 the new bridge over the Elbe was completed. Napoleon occupied Wittenberg in 1806. With the Congress of Vienna Wittenberg fell to Prussia in 1815 and became a Prussian garrison town in 1820 . The industrial boom in Wittenberg and the surrounding area began with the deconsolidation resolution of 1873. At that time there were around 50 businesses in Pratau.
In 1903 Emil Krüger founded the Milka -Nährmittelfabrik GmbH. The initial number of 20 employees quickly increased tenfold. The local raw materials such as milk , tallow and lard soon became scarce due to the demand for the company's products, so that one had to resort to vegetable fats . As a result, an oil refinery , the "Pratana", was built in 1908 , and vegetable butter was produced. In 1920 the company was taken over by the Van den Bergh company and in 1930 it was transferred to Unilever, which was then founded . In the GDR, which was margarine factory Pratau in the 1950 VVB oil and margarine industry Magdeburg incorporated and came in 1979 to VEB Kombinat oil and margarine Magdeburg . After reunification , the production facility went to Unilever Bestfoods Germany , in 1991 the production of Rama began and in 1994 that of Lätta .
In 2002, almost the entire town was flooded by the flood of the century , including the entire Unilever plant. However, thanks to the exemplary help of the workforce and helpers, it was able to achieve full production volume again within a few days.
On October 15, 1993, the previously independent municipality of Pratau was incorporated into the district town of Lutherstadt Wittenberg together with its district of Wachsdorf.
In Pratau there is a primary school with around 80 pupils, who also come from the surrounding villages.
