Map with all linked sites: The floods in Dili on Friday March 13, 2020 affected the center and east of the East Timorese capital. Three people were injured and one died. 200 residents were left homeless and had to seek refuge in emergency shelters. 300 more were able to leave the accommodations by Monday and return to their homes. A total of 2000 families with 10,000 people in 13 sucos were affected by the flood.
Happening
Heavy rains started shortly before 4 p.m. The small rivers Maloa and Bidau swelled quickly, tearing tree stones, mud and debris from the hills, where illegal construction accelerated erosion. The material that was washed away, along with the large amounts of rubbish in the canals, clogged the drainage system, flooding numerous houses in Dili.
In the Escola Portuguesa Ruy Cinatti , near the Santa Cruz cemetery , teachers and hundreds of students had to flee to the first floor from the masses of water. A 16-year-old girl died in Becussi .
Damage
The water destroyed houses mainly in the districts of Santa Cruz (2,100 people), Becora (1,750), Bidau Santana (907), Bairro Pite (456), Balide , Hera (590 families), Bemori , Caicoli and Maloa . The presidential palace was also under water. In addition to the Escola Portuguesa , the Escola Secundária Geral 5 de Maio de Becora and the Escola do Ensino Básico Akanunu in Hera were also badly damaged. Three rooms of the 5 de Maio had to be demolished. There was minor damage to a school in Camea . The government used soldiers for the clean-up work. The remaining mud dried very quickly in the sun, which made the work difficult.
