(12355) Coelho is an asteroid of the main outer belt , which was discovered on August 18, 1993 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the Schmidt telescope of the French Observatoire de Calern near Grasse ( IAU code 010). An unconfirmed sighting of the asteroid had already taken place on October 14, 1979 under the provisional designation 1979 TK 2 at the Crimean Observatory in Nautschnyj .

The asteroid is a member of the Koronis family, a group of asteroids named after (158) Koronis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (12355) Coelho are almost identical to those of three smaller ones, assuming the absolute magnitude of 16.2, 17.3 and 17.1 compared to 13.5, asteroids: (179320) 2001 WH 30 , (341221) 2007 RB 135 and (350457) 1997 UZ 15 .

(12355) Coelho was named after the Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho on July 12, 2014 . His novel from 1988 " The Alchemist " is particularly highlighted in the naming text .
