(12524) Conscience is an asteroid of the main inner belt discovered on April 25, 1998 by the Belgian astronomer Eric Walter Elst at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory ( IAU code 809) in Chile . The asteroid had already been sighted in August 1995 under the provisional name 1995 QY10 at the same observatory.

(12524) Conscience was named on September 28, 2004 after the Flemish narrator and co-founder of Flemish literature Hendrik Conscience (1812-1883). With his work, Conscience gave an unprecedented boost not only to Flemish culture, but also to Flemish identity.
