(16590) Brunowalter is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 21, 1992 by the German astronomers Freimut Börngen and Lutz D. Schmadel at the Thuringian State Observatory in Tautenburg ( IAU code 033) in Thuringia .

The asteroid was named on November 11, 2000 after the German-Austrian-American conductor , pianist and composer Bruno Walter (1876–1962), who was one of the most important conductors of the 20th century and was Kapellmeister of the Leipzig Gewandhaus (1929–1933) , Chief conductor of the New York Philharmonic (1947–1949) and permanent guest conductor of the Vienna Philharmonic .
