(16682) Donati is an asteroid of the main belt , which was discovered on March 18, 1994 by the Italian astronomers Marco Cavagna and Valter Giuliani at the Osservatorio Astronomico Sormano ( IAU code 587) in Sormano .
The asteroid was named on July 13, 2004 after the Italian astronomer Giovanni Battista Donati (1826–1873), who advanced the spectroscopy of celestial bodies. He was one of the first to investigate the spectrum of a comet and is the discoverer of six comets, including the C / 1858 L1 (Donati) which is visible to the naked eye .
He induced the government to build the Arcetri Observatory on a hill near Florence between 1860 and 1872 .
