(18872) Tammann is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on November 8, 1999 by the Swiss astronomer Stefano Sposetti at the Osservatorio Astronomico di Gnosca ( IAU code 143) in Gnosca in the canton of Ticino .
The asteroid was named after Gustav Andreas Tammann , a Göttingen- born cosmologist and professor of astronomy at the University of Basel . Tammann enjoys a worldwide reputation as an expert in determining the Hubble constants .
