(2282) Andrés Bello ( 1974 FE ; 1931 AC 1 ; 1951 EH 2 ; 1962 QC ; 1974 HO ; 1979 YL ) is an asteroid of the main inner belt that was discovered on March 22, 1974 by the Chilean astronomer Carlos Torres at the Cerro El Roble observatory was discovered at Cerro El Roble in La Campana National Park ( IAU code 805).

designation

(2282) Andrés Bello was named after Andrés Bello (1781–1865), a Venezuelan- Chilean international lawyer , diplomat , philosopher , philologist and poet . He was the first rector of the Universidad de Chile . In 1852 he was involved in setting up the National Astronomical Observatory of Chile and persuaded the Chilean government to buy equipment from a team of researchers from the United States led by astronomer James Melville Gilliss . The asteroid was named after Bello in 1981 on the occasion of his 200th birthday.
