(3061) Cook is an asteroid of the main belt , which on 21 October 1982 by the US American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at the Anderson Mesa Station ( IAU code 688) of the Lowell Observatory in Coconino County was discovered.

The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .

The asteroid was named after the British navigator and explorer James Cook (1728–1779) who mapped numerous islands on three voyages in the Pacific Ocean and advanced as far as the Arctic Circle .
