(3514) Hooke is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered on August 18, 1972 by the Czech astronomer Luboš Kohoutek at the Hamburg observatory ( IAU code 029) in the Hamburg district of Bergedorf .
The asteroid was named on May 23, 2000 after the English polymath Robert Hooke (1635-1703), who is mainly known for the law of elasticity named after him .
