(38237) Roche is an asteroid of the main belt , the on 16 July 1999 at pises observatory in National Park Cevennen ( IAU code was discovered 122). The first sightings of the asteroid had already been made on March 23, 1980 under the provisional designation 1980 FS 8 at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile and on December 7 and 8, 1997 as part of the OCA-DLR Asteroid Survey .

The asteroid belongs to the Nysa group, a group of asteroids named after (44) Nysa , which is also known as the Hertha family (after (135) Hertha ).

(38237) Roche was named on May 23, 2005 after the French astronomer and mathematician Édouard Albert Roche (1820–1883), who was best known for his work in the field of celestial mechanics.
