(4779) Whitley is an asteroid of the main belt , which from the on December 6, 1978 American US astronomer Edward LG Bowell and Archibald Warnock at Palomar Observatory ( IAU code 675) in California was discovered.

The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis .

(4779) Whitley was named after the American country musician Keith Whitley (1955-1989).
