(6654) Luleå is an asteroid of the main outer belt , which was discovered on February 29, 1992 during the Uppsala-ESO Survey of Asteroids and Comets at the La Silla Observatory of the European Southern Observatory in Chile ( IAU code 809). The asteroid had already been sighted on November 15 and 17, 1990 at the same observatory under the provisional designation 1990 VW 5 .

The asteroid belongs to the Hygiea family, a rather older group of asteroids, as is believed, the largest member of which is the asteroid (10) Hygiea .

(6654) Luleå was named on September 28, 1999 after the northern Swedish city ​​of Luleå .
