(68410) Nichols is a major middle belt asteroid discovered on August 16, 2001 by US astronomers Michael Collins and Minor White at the OCA-Anza Observatory ( IAU code 643) in Anza , Riverside County , California .
According to the SMASS classification ( Small Main-Belt Asteroid Spectroscopic Survey ), a spectroscopic study by Gianluca Masi , Sergio Foglia and Richard P. Binzel at (68410) Nichols assumed a dark surface, so it could, roughly speaking, be trade a C asteroid .
(68410) Nichols was named after actress Nichelle Nichols , who played Lieutenant Uhura in the television series Starship Enterprise and later worked for the US space agency NASA . The asteroid was named on September 19, 2005.
