(7621) Sweelinck is an asteroid of the outer main belt , which was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .
The orbit inclination of (7621) Sweelinck is small at 0.31 °, it is more similar to the plane of the earth's orbit around the sun than the orbit of the other seven planets .
The asteroid belongs to the Themis family, a group of asteroids named after (24) Themis . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (7621) Sweelinck are almost identical to those of the larger one, assuming the absolute brightness of 12.3 compared to 14.5, asteroids (5346) 1981 QE 3 .
(7621) Sweelinck is named after the Dutch organist and composer Jan Pieterszoon Sweelinck (1562–1621), who, as organist in the Oude Kerk in Amsterdam, had a great influence on the North German organ school of the 17th century. It was named on October 16, 1997. Together with Girolamo Frescobaldi, Sweelinck is considered to be the most influential composer for keyboard instruments of the first half of the 17th century. The asteroid of the outer main belt (11289) was named Frescobaldi after Frescobaldi .
