(8235) Fragonard is an asteroid of the main belt that was discovered on September 24, 1960 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery came about as part of the Palomar-Leiden survey , during which Tom Gehrels examined field plates recorded at the University of Leiden with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory .

The asteroid belongs to the Clarissa family, a group of asteroids named after (302) Clarissa .

(8235) Fragonard was named on April 2, 1999 after the French painter , draftsman and etcher of the Rococo Jean-Honoré Fragonard (1732-1806), who, along with François Boucher and Antoine Watteau, is one of the three masters of the French Rococo.
