(8601) Ciconia is an asteroid of the main outer belt , which was discovered on September 30, 1973 by the Dutch astronomer couple Cornelis Johannes van Houten and Ingrid van Houten-Groeneveld . The discovery was made during the 2nd Trojan survey, during which Tom Gehrels surveyed field plates recorded with the 120 cm Oschin Schmidt telescope of the Palomar observatory at the University of Leiden , 13 years after the start of the Palomar-Leiden- Surveys .
The asteroid belongs to the Hygiea family, a rather older group of asteroids, as is believed, the largest member of which is the asteroid (10) Hygiea . The timeless (non- osculating ) orbital elements of (8601) Ciconia are almost identical to those of nine smaller ones, if one considers the absolute brightness of 14.9, 14.7, 15.2, 14.9, 15.4, 15, 7, 15.4, 16.1 and 15.6 compared to 13.5, asteroids: (113279) 2002 RN 159 , (119025) 2001 BG 30 , (157009) 2003 QW 18 , (159526) 2001 FB 121 , ( 214487) Baranivka , (247424) 2002 CD 288 , (275167) 2009 WW 15 , (331276) 2011 CO 90 and (340672) 2006 RJ 42 .
(8601) Ciconia is named after the white stork , whose scientific name is Ciconia ciconia . At the time the asteroid was named on February 2, 1999, the white stork was on the Dutch and European Red List of Endangered Birds .
