(96) Aegle is an asteroid of the main outer belt discovered on February 17, 1868 by the French astronomer Jérôme-Eugène Coggia .

The asteroid was named after Aigle , one of the nymphs called Naiads from Greek mythology .

(96) Aegle is an asteroid of the comparatively rare spectral type T. Together with the asteroids (308) Polyxo (141 km in diameter), (596) Scheila (113 km) and (233) Asterope (100 km), it is one of the largest bodies this guy.

Aegle family

(96) Aegle is ancestral body of the Aegle family of asteroids. This family includes almost one hundred asteroids, including (27938) Guislain, (121656) Jamesrogers and (290001) Uebersax.
