The 1st league , the third-highest ice hockey division in Switzerland, of the 2015/16 season began in September 2015 and ends in April 2016. A total of 35 teams played in three regional groups. The defending champion was EHC Winterthur .

The 35 teams in the first division are divided into three regional groups of 12 or 11 teams. With the exception of the final round, all games took place within these groups.

At the beginning of the season there was a qualifying round in which all 12 or 11 teams play twice against each opponent, thus completing 22 or 20 rounds. After qualification, each group was divided into a Masterround I and a Masterround II. Those ranked 1-6 after qualification played in group Masterround I in a round-trip round for ranks 1 to 6 (1 to 5 in group II) for the play-offs . Those ranked 7-12 (6 to 11 in Group II) after qualification played in a round-trip round for the 2 playoff places 7 + 8 and for ranks 9-12 for the relegation round. In Group I (Eastern Switzerland) and Group II (Central Switzerland) the points of the qualification were halved for the Masterround, in Group III (Suisse Romande) all points of the qualification round were taken into the Masterround.

The play-offs were held as a “best-of-five” series, with the winner of the playoff final qualifying for the finals of the Swiss amateur championship. The relegation round took place in Group 1 (Eastern Switzerland) as a round trip. The teams started with the number of points according to the status at the end of Masterround II. The last placed in the relegation round was relegated to the 2nd league for the next season. In Group II (Central Switzerland) there was no round of relegation due to the odd number of teams. In Group III (Suisse Romande) the relegation round took place in the form of a playout semi-final (best-of-five series) and a playout final (best-of-five series). The loser of the playout finals was relegated to the 2nd division.

There was no athletic relegation in the 2015/2016 season. In the group Eastern Switzerland, the HCC Biasca rose to the National League B, so EC Wil did not have to relegate. Forward Morges and HC Star Lausanne merged to form HC Star Forward in the Suisse Romande group. The playout final was not played.

The promotion to the National League B took place:

  • if a team met the criteria of the National League,
  • reported the desire for promotion before the season and,
  • won the Swiss amateur championship.
