history

Start and finish area of the Külsheim
12-hour MTB race, since 2012 in Gewerbepark II , here in 2018

In 2003, footballers from FC Külsheim had the idea of running a bike race on the old cinder track that was in need of renovation. After the idea of a 12-hour mountain bike race arose, the development association of FC Külsheim, founded in 2003, and the main club were won over. In order to make the route attractive for mountain bikers, parts of the Bundeswehr training area (e.g. the Panzer Hill and the Ho Chi Minh Trail) and the adjacent forest (mud run) were included in the route. The first race under the title Weberei Pahl 12-hour mountain bike race started on July 17, 2004 , before it was renamed the 12-hour mountain bike race in 2005 , although Weberei Pahl remained the main sponsor in the future. From 2004 to 2006 (races 1–3) the start and finish were on the FC Külsheim sports grounds.

With the renovation of the sports grounds of FC Külsheim and the closure of the Prinz Eugen barracks , the start and finish area was relocated to the site of the former barracks. From 2007 to 2011 (races 4–8) the start and finish was on an old gravel parking lot, right next to the sports hall, the indoor swimming pool 25/12 and the Aktivwelt Külsheim with overnight accommodation in the former Bundeswehr area.

After an open-air photovoltaic system was built on the old gravel parking lot , a new start and finish area had to be set up in 2012. The purchase of the former Prinz-Eugen-Kaserne by the city of Külsheim resulted in the industrial park II . In 2012 the city of Külsheim made a space available there for the Külsheim 12-hour MTB race. From 2012 to 2020 (races 9-17) the start and finish on two former sports fields are only a few 100 meters away from the old gravel parking lot.

The organizer offers free shuttle buses between 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. with which spectators can commute between the most exciting sections of the race. In addition, the organizer will provide around 35 tents as retreats for the participants, for example for breaks and as storage places for luggage. There is also a large tent and a beer garden for entertaining spectators and drivers.

The program is rounded off on Fridays by an MTB kids race from 5 pm with up to 100 participants and the “Trail Run” charity run from 6.30 pm for the benefit of regional disabled sports. Up to 500 participants start on the race Saturday alone.

Remarks

  1. For the lap record, the highest number of laps in the respective category counts first (from 12h single starter male / female to 12h team of 4 mixed), then the fastest time driven so far per category for the corresponding number of laps. Distances (~ 10 km) and vertical meters (~ 250 m altitude) per lap of the individual years correspond.
