The Division no. 179 / Armored Division no. 179 / 179. Reserve-Panzer Division was a military major unit of the Wehrmacht .

Division history

The "Division No. 179" was set up in January 1940 in Weimar to lead the replacement troops in a part of the military district IX. For this purpose, division No. 159 already existed here , from which it took over parts. In April 1942 it was renamed "Division No. 179 (motorized)" and a year later to " Panzer Division No. 179". At the end of July 1943 it was renamed to “179. Reserve Panzer Division ”and relocation to France , where it served as an occupation force. In May 1944 the division was disbanded in order to form the 116th Panzer Division from it and the remnants of the 16th Panzer Grenadier Division, which had been smashed on the Eastern Front . The division did not take part in any major combat operations.
