history

division

The Panzer Division Norway was formed on August 25, 1943 at the Trandum military training area near Oslo (today Oslo-Gardermoen Airport ) from parts of the 25th Panzer Division left behind in Norway when the main part of this division was relocated from Norway to France there to prepare for deployment on the Eastern Front . The association, called a division for camouflage reasons, with only one tank battalion with 47 Panzerkampfwagen III already overtaken at that time , however, only had the combat strength of a regiment , because the assigned Panzergrenadierregiment was only battalion strength . There was no combat operation. The division was disbanded in July 1944, as the majority of its units had already been delivered to Denmark from May 1944 to re-establish the 25th Panzer Division, which had been destroyed in northern Ukraine in February 1944.

brigade

In Norway only the Panzer Brigade Norway , formed on July 13, 1944 in Trandum from its remnants, remained , which consisted of a small tank battalion and the Panzergrenadier battalion "Norway" (later renamed "Sturmbataillon Norway"). The staff of the brigade was formed from the personnel of the disbanded Panzer Brigade 21. The brigade was relocated to Narvik in January 1945 to counter a Soviet offensive in northern Norway. But she was never involved in fighting, capitulated with the XXXVI. Mountain Corps ( 20th Mountain Army ) and went into British captivity on May 10, 1945.
