(2-Butoxyethyl) acetate is a chemical compound from the group of carboxylic acid esters and ethers .

Extraction and presentation

(2-Butoxyethyl) acetate is mainly produced by reacting 2-butoxyethanol with acetic acid. To a lesser extent, the reaction with acetic anhydride or acetic acid chloride is also used for production.

properties

(2-Butoxyethyl) acetate is a slightly volatile, colorless liquid with a faint ester-like odor, which is not very soluble in water. It decomposes when heated, producing acrid and irritating vapors. Due to its ether bridge and ester group , butyl glycol acetate shows the reactions typical for this class of substances. At 20 ° C it has a viscosity of 1.79 mPa · s, a surface tension of 28.5 mN / m, a dielectric constant of 6.8 and a specific heat capacity of 2.004 kJ / (kg · K). Its heat of combustion at 25 ° C is 29,350 kJ / kg and its heat of vaporization at 1013 mbar is 279 kJ / kg.

use

(2-Butoxyethyl) acetate is mainly used in the paint industry. Because of its low volatility and its good dissolving power, it is used here as an additive to stoving enamels that are stoved at high temperatures (150–200 ° C). It improves the gloss and flow of the paint films. By the addition of very small amounts of butyl glycol acetate to coating lacquers based on cellulose nitrate , chlorine-containing binders or cellulose ethers can be improved their course and spreadability. It is also suitable as a solvent for isocyanate varnishes , ballpoint pen pastes , flexographic printing inks , gravure printing inks , screen printing inks and is used for leather and textile printing.

safety instructions

The vapors of (2-butoxyethyl) acetate form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point 74 ° C, ignition temperature 355 ° C).
