2-chloropentane is an organochlorine compound from the group of aliphatic , saturated halogenated hydrocarbons . It occurs in two stereoisomeric forms, the enantiomers ( R ) - and ( S ) -2-chloropentane.

Extraction and presentation

The racemate of 2-chloropentane can be obtained by reacting 2-pentene with hydrogen chloride . The ( S ) form can be obtained by reacting ( S ) -pentan-2-ol with thionyl chloride , and the ( R ) form in the presence of pyridine . The reaction of pentane with chlorine is unselective and also gives the racemic mixture.

safety instructions

The vapors of 2-chloropentane can form an explosive mixture with air ( flash point approx. −2 ° C).
