5 or The 5 Network is a Filipino television station owned by MediaQuest Holdings . In 2016 it was named the third largest television broadcaster in the Philippines by the Media Ownership Monitor Philippines.

The television station broadcasts a full analogue , terrestrial program in the VHF and digitally in the UHF frequency range and is freely receivable. Its name is derived from the VHF channel 5, which it used in the greater Manila area.

history

The television station was founded in 1960 after the Philippines legalized private radio and television broadcasting on June 19, 1960. The television station was founded by Joaquin Roces, then the majority owner of The Manila Times under the name ABC (Associated Broadcasting Corporation). The station was banned in 1972 by President Ferdinand Marcos together with the newspaper, the owner went to prison. Only after the re-establishment of democracy was the station approved again in 1992 and resumed broadcasting under Edgardo, the son of Joaquin Roces. In 2003 the television station was sold to PLDT , the country's leading telephone operator . In 2008 Media Prima Berhad of Malaysia took over the majority of the television station, but sold it to Manuel V. Pangilinan, the owner of MediaQuest, in 2009. As part of the transfer, he was given the name TV5 and the company behind the name TV5 Network Incorporated. In 2008, competitors had sued the television station for the involvement of the Malaysian Media Prima. The station would violate the 1987 constitution, which forbade foreign controlling interests in mass media in the Philippines. A court agreed with the competitors. Media Prima withdrew from its partnership in the Philippines and sold its shares back to PLDT.

broadcasts

Originally, the TV station's priority was news and sports coverage. In 2019 the program was broadened. Purchased entertainment programs are primarily broadcast today. Airtime is also sold to independent producers and programs from the television station Cignal TV, which is also part of MediaQuest Holding, are broadcast. Robert P. Galang, the broadcaster's president, is also the president of Cignal TV.
