9GAG is an English-language online platform on which images, GIF animations and videos are shared, commented on and rated by users. Most of the postings are humorous content such as internet memes or rage comics . In some cases, 9GAG is criticized due to the lack of sources in the contributions.

The two sites 9GAG.com and 9GAG.tv belong to 9GAG, Inc. with its headquarters in Hong Kong.

content

Old logo (until the end of 2012)

The site is structured similar to a blog : "Gags" ( German : jokes , ideas ) are shown in the form of pictures or videos, which can then be commented on by other users via their 9GAG, Google+ or Facebook accounts . The website got its name because up until February 2012, nine “gags” were displayed on each page. 9GAG is divided into the categories Hot, Trending and Fresh. A more specific classification of the postings takes place in the categories Funny, NSFW , WTF , GIF , Geeky , Meme , Cute Animals, Comic , Cosplay , Food, Girl, Timely, Dark Humor, School, Country, Ask 9Gag, Anime & Manga , Awesome, Movie & TV, Christmas (removed), Design (removed), No Fear No Fun (beta), I Made Dis, Relationship, Family (beta), Mad Lab (beta), Savage (beta), Gangsta Girl (beta), Marvel and DC (beta), J. Cena, Gag of the Day, and Damn U Politics.

Short stories about everyday situations , which are often depicted with Rage Comics , are very popular . Corresponding, processed images of well-known personalities such as Barack Obama , Neil Patrick Harris (as Barney Stinson from How I Met Your Mother ), Yao Ming , Jackie Chan and Neil deGrasse Tyson are used for different emotional reactions . Pop cultural allusions or references are also often the content of the contributions, as well as contributions from the nerd culture environment . You can often find memes related to films such as The Lord of the Rings , Star Wars , Harry Potter or Disney films. Also frequently Internet phenomena such as Gangnam Style and Harlem Shake and occasionally parodied political issues.

Most of the images presented originally came from other sites. Ray Chan, owner and founder of the site, said:

"9GAG does not create memes or rage comics but helps to spread them."

"9GAG does not create new memes or rage comics, it helps to spread them."

Apps

The chat app COOKIE (formerly 9CHAT ) has been available since summer 2014 and can be used in conjunction with a 9GAG account. In addition to this app and the 9GAG and 9GAG TV apps , the 9GAG Redhead Redemption and 9GAG Ramen Celebrity games are available in the app stores.

Criticism and reception

Authorship and references

The administrators of the site control the various sub-sites of 9GAG. The Reddit page is used as the source for the most part ; in the past, this website was even openly stated as the source.

Calling up 4chan users

Copying pictures, videos, and text from popular websites like Reddit and 4chan created a conflict between the sites. The raid carried out by 4chan users under the name "Operation 9GAG" consisted largely of agreed uploads of disturbing gore pictures and the like, which were displayed on the vote page and were partly voted up by raid participants on the trending page. This was still possible due to the low filtering compared to the current state. The consequences were that the upload page was temporarily switched off and the ability to create accounts was blocked. A DDoS attack planned for the same day meant that the site was inaccessible for many users.

Many of the uploaded images received a banner from 9GAG that showed the note VIA 9GAG.COM , which is why many users incorrectly assumed that the image was originally from 9GAG. As of December 2, 2016, the banner is no longer added. In most cases, the original sources are not mentioned. Often even the artist's watermarks are removed / retouched.

Cyber bullying and discrimination

At the beginning of 2012, it is proven that some users of 4chan and 9GAG published offensive pictures on the Facebook reminder page of Amanda Cummings, a girl who had previously committed suicide as a result of cyberbullying , and sometimes grossly insulted the deceased. The images that had been published on 9GAG itself were deleted immediately.

In his work " Creating Identity and Building Bridges Between Cultures: The Case of 9gag " , published in 2014, the linguist Albin Wagener examined 446 posts that could be found on the 9gag hot page. 40 of them were clearly discriminatory , which makes up 8.97%. The largest proportion of discriminatory posts was misogynistic (57.5%), followed by cultural discrimination (25%) and homophobia (12.5%). According to Wagener, 9gag brings people together in an international context, but through masculine and heterosexual symbolism and the devaluation of other groups. Discrimination and Western monoculturalism are the connecting “values”.

The dissemination of discriminatory content is not limited to the postings alone, but also extends to the comment columns. Actors who campaign against discrimination there are exposed to hate speech and are silenced. Starting with 9gag, discriminatory content is also spread through the comment functions of other platforms such as Reddit. 2019, a case was announced allegedly in which from 9gag a sexist and transphobic Shitstorm to the detriment of women's desk of the University of Mainz went out.

In a paper from 2015, Jose Gutierrez III writes that prejudices against nationalities as well as sexist and racist jokes are spreading on the platform . The platform is used to override political correctness under the protection of comedy . Nevertheless, the humorous component of the postings play an important role. There are also contributions that advocate pluralism.

Announcements of rampages

9GAG users were initially accused of being jointly responsible for the Aurora rampage . Weeks earlier, a user threatened to organize a shootout in a cinema, whereupon readers encouraged the person and even gave him tips. After the rumor found its way into the Huffington Post , those responsible at 9GAG immediately denied it.

A possible rampage at the Technical University of Munich was suggested for February 19, 2018 . However, the image disappeared from the platform after a short time. The operation of the university was not affected.

reception

Author Clay Shirky described 9GAG as "the product of cognitive surplus" in his book Cognitive Surplus . Business Review India added 9GAG to its list of Insane Trends for 2012 .

When the fun portal shared an emoji music video by Yuri & Neil in October 2017 , which quickly became a viral success and as a result the band entered into negotiations with major music labels (including Universal Music , Warner Music , and Sony Music ) just hours later signed a record deal within 24 hours after the video was released , individual media let themselves be carried away by the superlative "fastest record deal in the world".
