Upper Nile ( German  Obernil ) is the northernmost state in South Sudan .

It has an area of ​​77,773 km² and, according to the official results of the 2008 census, around 964,000 inhabitants. Its capital is Malakal .

geography

The White Nile flows through the state from south-west to north, meeting the Sobat River halfway through the state, which flows north-west from the south-east.

In the state is the city of Kodok , which was the scene of the Faschoda crisis . Other larger towns are Nasir , Maiwut , Melut and Renk .

Upper Nile has oil deposits belonging to the Melut Basin . Since 2006, oil has been exported from here via Port Sudan .

history

From 1919 to 1976 Upper Nile was a province of Anglo-Egyptian Sudan and then the independent Republic of Sudan and also included the present-day states of Jonglei and Unity . In 1976, the Junqali province, which corresponds to today's state of Jonglei, was split off, so that the province only consisted of the area of ​​today's states of Upper Nile and Unity. In 1991 the province was converted into a state and the borders from 1919 to 1976 were restored. On February 14, 1994, the states of Junqali and al-Wahda (now Unity) were split off. Since its independence from Sudan on July 9, 2011, Upper Nile has been a federal state of South Sudan.
