action

Pierre Martin, professor of quantum physics in Paris, learns after a lecture that his aunt Jeanne has died in Canada. She leaves him a hostel in Sainte-Simone-du-Nord, a town with 400 souls, near Québec . Fire and flame he wants to emigrate to Canada with his daughter Catherine. Catherine lives with her father, is a city dweller through and through and doesn't think much of Pierre's plans. Especially since the notarial contract stipulates that both must live in the hostel for a year and a day in order to inherit it, otherwise it falls to the municipality. When Pierre mentions an additional inheritance of a little over € 1 million, Catherine's doubts are instantly gone.

Together with Catherine's dog, they both arrive in the snow-covered and ice-cold village and are personally received by Mayor Michel Dolbec. However, he has his sights set on the hostel himself and wants to scare them off as quickly as possible. For the other villagers, the French are visitors from another planet. Pierre and Catherine move into the hostel. Pierre is a person who cannot be put off his good mood by anything. Catherine, on the other hand, is just the opposite.

The mayor Michel leaves no stone unturned to get rid of the two. Together with some of the villagers, he manipulates the inn's water pipes, cuts the telephone line, turns off the electricity and removes important mail from France. The only one who stands by and supports them is Mario. While painting together, Catherine seduces him, which is more like a pastime. When Michel’s dog eats up Catherine's little dog to make matters worse, the world finally collapses for Catherine. She sits in the hostel completely drunk and decides to return to Paris.

But after Pierre saves Michel's life in a snowstorm and more and more villagers are against Michel's measures, the tide turns. Michel asks forgiveness and in future Pierre and his daughter are fully accepted. In addition, Catherine and Mario become a couple. Pierre's statement about the millionaire inheritance was a lie to get his daughter excited about this adventure in the first place.

criticism

"Amusing comedy that is charmingly cast, but is about the clash of different attitudes towards life without too much depth."

"France's old comedy star Pierre Richard (" The tall blonde with the black shoe ") has turned gray in honor and is once again playing the naive optimist in the Gaulish-Canadian comedy, whose mood cannot be sabotaged by malicious sabotage. Satire and punch lines hold back in the harmless fun that gets a little like the "Sch'tis" and the jovial old star Sylvie Testud ("Beyond the Silence") as a resolute daughter and Rémy Girard ("The Invasion of the Barbarians") ) contrasts.
