occupation

A Mulher do Próximo ( Portuguese for: The Wife of the Neighbor) is a tragic-comic film by the Portuguese director José Fonseca e Costa from 1988 .

In Denmark the film appeared as Din næstes hustru and in Spain as La mujer del prójimo , otherwise it is performed internationally under the English title The Neighbor's Wife .

action

The quiet and carefree life of the wealthy and cultivated Castro Silva family is shaken when the head of the family, Mário, dies with his young lover Terry. After the dead person has been identified in the morgue , the widow Cristina and her daughter Isabel, who has traveled from Brazil, meet António, an old friend of Mario. Mário and Cristina were a couple when they were young.

In addition, there is gossip among the domestic workers, but also their own ambitions and circumstances. Sometimes they have to suffer rebukes and punishments from family members, but the family and employees also share moments between confidentiality, friendship and desire. The butler Manuel in particular plays an essential role in both worlds of the house and enjoys the attention of the teenage daughter Isabel, who in turn wants to evade the eccentric Henrique.

In this context, a sequence of dialogues and scenes full of black humor and a bizarre search for meaning relax. The appearances of obviously untalented chamber musicians around the pianist and composer António Victorino de Almeida at the meals of the family and the different ways in which the family members treat them represents one of the other comical elements.

production

Location of the film: the Casa de Sezim in Nespereira

In addition to music from the Carnival of the Animals and pieces of Jacques Offenbach and Johann Strauss in which the film music nor that of Teresa Salgueiro sung and provided by Miguel Esteves Cardoso with a Portuguese text version of Irving Berlin Marie (The Dawn Is Breaking) to name .

reception

The film opened in Portuguese cinemas on December 1, 1988 and was well received by critics and audiences alike.

The criticism rated him very positively. In addition to the script, the actors were particularly praised: both the return of the well-known actor Virgílio Teixeira and the introduction of the Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres in the Portuguese cinema were considered successful, as was the sovereign performance of the renowned Portuguese theater actress Carmen Dolores .

The film also represents a seamless transition of Fonseca e Costa's work from his more political films to his henceforth more entertaining work. Although it continues to show the comfortable idleness of the upper - class upper class, there are no direct political references here.

The work has been shown at a number of film festivals , including the renowned Mostra Internacional de Cinema de São Paulo and the Ibero-American Film Festival in Huelva , Spain , where it won the main prize, the Golden Columbus ( Colón ).

In 2014 the film was released on DVD in Portugal.
