Abbas Cachiane Kaefe Rhebisch

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Abbas Cachiane Kaefe Rhebisch (born between 1722 and 1724 in Očakov on the Black Sea ; died on October 27, 1766 in Heimburg ) was a Turkish lady-in-waiting and pastor's wife .

Life

Rhebisch was born in a port town near the mouth of the Dnieper , which was part of the Ottoman Empire at the time . She was the daughter of a wealthy Turkish treasurer and judge ( Kadi ) from Constantinople and his wife, who came from an Armenian tribe of Georgians . When she was around 15 or 16 years old in 1737, she was given the veil customary for Turkish women, which she wore in public from then on. The city was conquered and burned down in July of this year in the course of the Russo-Austrian Turkish War by the Russian army under the leadership of Field Marshal von Münnich . The survivors from the population were distributed to the Russian officers as spoils of war. Rhebisch came into the possession of Duke Anton Ulrich von Braunschweig-Bevern , who was involved in this campaign as a colonel with the Bevers cuirassier regiment .

When the plague raged in the city, troops withdrew from the region and took their prisoners to Saint Petersburg via Kiev and Moscow . The Duke of Braunschweig-Bevern planned to send the girl into the care of his grandmother in Blankenburg . Before that, however, he gave them to the St. Petersburg court doctor Jaquemin to have them taught in the German language and to familiarize them with the Christian faith. The young woman was baptized on January 19, 1739 by the French Reformed pastor Robert Dunant in the name of Anna Charlotte Rhebisch.

Blankenburg and Zorge

After her conversion to Christianity, Rhebisch was threatened by relatives who were also prisoners in Saint Petersburg, so that the court doctor personally escorted her to Duchess Christine Luise in Blankenburg via Riga, Berlin and Braunschweig . The Duchess appointed her her chambermaid and reader. In 1747 the Duchess had her engaged to the pastor Christian Moritz Grimm (1722–1789), who was active as a collegiate in the nearby Michaelstein Monastery . The duchess died shortly before the planned wedding date, so that Rhebisch lost the dowry of 500 thalers that had been promised to her through intrigues at court. The wedding was held on December 1, 1747 in Blankenburg. The Grimms lived in Zorge from then on , where their husband received his first pastorate. The marriage suffered from economic difficulties and the outbreak of the Seven Years' War . In the nearly nineteen years of their marriage, she gave birth to nine children, three daughters and six sons. After the birth of the last son, however, she fell ill and died of "red Friesel" ( fever with red rash ).

The Braunschweig City Museum owns a half-length portrait of Anna Charlotte Grimm by the painter Christian Wilhelm Ernst Dietrich .
