Sir Henry Abel Smith KCMG KCVO DSO (born March 8, 1900 in London , † January 24, 1993 in Wellington Lodge , Winkfield , Berkshire ) was a British officer and Governor of Queensland .

Life

Henry Abel Smith was born to Francis Abel Smith and his wife Madeline St. Maur Seymour. His grandparents were Henry Abel-Smith and Elizabeth Mary Pym, his great-grandparents were Francis Pym and Lady Lucy Leslie-Melville, daughter of John Leslie-Melville, 9th Earl of Leven.

After graduating from the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst , he became an officer in the Royal Horse Guards in December 1919 . He served in World War II and was awarded the Distinguished Service Order . In 1950 he retired with the rank of colonel .

On October 24, 1931, he married Lady May Cambridge (1906-1993), nee Princess von Teck and daughter of the Earl of Athlone . She was the niece of the British King George V and his wife Maria von Teck and the great-granddaughter of Queen Victoria . The couple had three children.

From March 18, 1958 to March 18, 1966 he held the office of Governor of Queensland. In this function he enjoyed a great reputation among the population; On the day of his departure from office, the population formed a line formation on his way to the airport in Brisbane.

He died on January 24, 1993. The funeral service took place in St George's Chapel at Windsor Castle . His grave is on the Frogmore Royal Burial Ground . His wife only survived him by sixteen months.
