The Augsburg waste recycling plant was put into operation in 1996 and is used to dispose of municipal and commercial waste from the Augsburg city ​​area and the districts of Augsburg , Aichach-Friedberg , Dillingen , Donau-Ries , Landsberg am Lech and Starnberg . On an area of ​​around 23 hectares, AVA Abfallverwertung Augsburg KU operates a waste-to-energy plant with around 160 employees with integrated hospital waste incineration , flue gas cleaning and slag processing , a biowaste fermentation plant and small-volume acceptance. Part of the facility is also a sorting facility for certain recyclable materials . However, since 2010 it has been operated by Kühl Verwaltung und Recycling Süd GmbH .

history

After the Second World War, the waste from the Augsburg city area was initially deposited in the Augsburg-Nord garbage dump near Gersthofen . In the 1970s, however, it became apparent that the landfill capacities would not be sufficient in the medium term. In 1980, the city of Augsburg and the districts of Aichach-Friedberg and Augsburg founded the association to prepare for the construction of a central waste disposal facility for the city of Augsburg and the districts of Augsburg and Aichach-Friedberg , which is now run as the Augsburg association for waste disposal .

In the following years, this association devoted itself to site appraisals , spatial planning and planning approval procedures until the AVA waste disposal Augsburg GmbH was founded on December 20, 1991 after the planning approval decision was issued by the government of Swabia .

After a four-year construction period, the individual components of the waste recycling plant gradually went into operation, which finally culminated in the commissioning of the waste-to-energy plant on January 17, 1996. A subsidiary founded on January 1, 2004 for the waste sorting area - AVA Re.Sort GmbH - was shut down again in 2009 and finally transferred back to the Augsburg waste recycling facility.

Since January 2013, as part of a model project, part of the waste heat generated during incineration has been stored in containers with sodium acetate ( latent heat storage ). These are then transported by truck to nearby Friedberg , where the heat is used to heat a school center.

At the AVA waste recycling Augsburg GmbH 2014 two partners were involved until the end: to 74.99 percent of the public law organized waste disposal association Augsburg , which consists of the city of Augsburg, the Aichach-Friedberg and the district of Augsburg, and to 25.01 percent the private Schwäbische Entsorgungsgesellschaft mbH (SE) , a wholly-owned subsidiary of Lechwerke AG. Since January 1, 2015, the waste recycling plant has been 100 percent in municipal hands.

On January 2, 2019, the company was converted into a municipal company (KU). The guarantor of the KU is the waste disposal association Augsburg (AZV), whose members are the city of Augsburg and the districts of Augsburg and Aichach-Friedberg.

Key figures

In 2016, around 250,000 tons of municipal and commercial waste were burned in the waste-to-energy plant. In addition, 3,500 tons of hospital waste were incinerated. The incineration produced around 59,000 tons of slag for further use. After deducting personal requirements, 59 GWh of electricity and 193 GWh of district heating could be fed into public networks from the incinerated waste.

In 2016, around 79,000 tonnes of biowaste were recycled in the biowaste fermentation plant. In several process steps, the biowaste was converted into around 35 GWh biogas, 15,000 tons of compost and 28,000 tons of liquid fertilizer.

The main component of the waste treatment plant is the waste-to-energy plant. There, electricity and district heating are generated from municipal and commercial waste from the region. In the first step, the waste delivered by truck is dumped into the garbage bunker. From there, the waste goes to the three kiln lines. Without the addition of oil or gas, the waste burns evenly in the ovens at a minimum of 850 ° C. The resulting flue gases are subjected to a 5-stage cleaning:

  1. Electrostatic precipitator
  2. Acid flue gas scrubbing
  3. Neutral flue gas scrubbing
  4. Denitrification system
  5. Activated carbon filter

The combustion residues are then placed in a water bath to cool down and then conveyed to the slag processing plant. In this plant, the raw slag is processed in several process steps and separated according to grain size. Magnetic and eddy current separators also sort scrap iron and non-ferrous metals from the slag. After processing, the slag is used as backfill material.

Two furnace lines for hospital waste are also integrated into the waste-to-energy plant. Infectious and pathological waste is burned there at temperatures around 1,000 ° C.

There is also a sorting system for lightweight packaging as well as paper and cardboard on the site . After delivery, the recyclable materials are automatically sorted and pressed into bales . The unmixed bales are then transported by truck to be used elsewhere. Foreign or disruptive substances are sorted out and incinerated. This part of the plant has been operated by Kühl Disposal and Recycling Süd GmbH since 2010 .

The biowaste collected in the region is converted into biogas as well as compost and liquid fertilizer in this part of the facility. For this purpose, the organic waste is mixed with green waste and then shredded and freed from contaminants. In the next process step, microorganisms in the fermenters decompose the waste at more than 50 ° C and generate biogas in the process. The remaining digestate is pressed in the last step and separated into a solid and a liquid fraction. After appropriate post-treatment, these two fractions are then converted into compost and liquid fertilizer.

Small quantity acceptance

When accepting small quantities, citizens of the city of Augsburg or the two districts of Augsburg and Aichach-Friedberg have the option of handing in household quantities of waste (sometimes for a fee). However, hazardous waste is not accepted .
