Begeyn was a member of the Lucasgilde in Leiden from April 24, 1655 to 1667. During his travels during this time, he visited, among other things, the area around Naples (around 1659) and made some paintings there, for example in 1660 of a quarry that is exhibited in the Mauritshuis . In 1672 he moved to Amsterdam and took a trip to London with his wife Margaretha (nee van Zyl) . From 1681 he worked in The Hague, where he was mainly concerned with decorating interiors. On December 18, 1683 he became a member of the Confrérie Pictura . In 1688 he designed a gate of honor in Berlin for the funeral of the Great Elector Friedrich Wilhelm , who died on May 9, 1688. Thereupon he was appointed court painter to the new Elector Friedrich III on October 22, 1688. appointed and endowed with an annual salary of 500 Thalers . Here he made a few sketches with scenes from the life of the Great Elector and Frederick, which served as templates for the production of large tapestries or tapestries by Pierre I Mercier . One of the originals or wallpapers from Begeyn was the siege of Stettin by the Great Elector, which was in the Hohenzollern Museum with five others .

At the behest of the elector, he undertook a trip through the Mark Brandenburg in 1696 to make drawings of the castles and views of the cities of Bielefeld , Cleve, Halberstadt , Minden and Wesel . These should serve to decorate the princely palaces. He created a view of a forest landscape near Kleve (Kupferstichkabinett Braunschweig ) and in 1697 a view of the Regenstein Fortress ( British Museum in London). Shortly after his return to Berlin, he died of a stroke. Michiel Carrée was his successor at court . One of his works can be seen in the Grunewald hunting lodge .

style

Begeyn's early pictures are reminiscent of Jan Asselijn or Nicolaes Pietersz. Berchem , his port views resemble the works of Jan Baptist Weenix or Johann Lingelbach , while his mountainous landscapes are reminiscent of Allart van Everdingen .
