Achim Karl Heinrich Wessing (born December 14, 1933 in Gladbeck ) is a German ophthalmologist, university professor and researcher. Until his retirement in 1996, he was director of the eye clinic at the University Hospital Essen and was one of the world's leading physicians in the field of retinological ophthalmology , where he is considered a pioneer in fluorescence angiography .

Origin and education

Achim Wessing was born as the only child of Hubert Wessing and his wife Anna (née Steffens). His father practiced as a miners' surgeon in Gladbeck- Butendorf . After graduating from the Ratsgymnasium , Achim Wessing studied medicine in Heidelberg , Innsbruck , Vienna , Kiel and Düsseldorf from 1953 and was there at the beginning of 1959 with a thesis on a follow-up examination on questions of the genesis of congenital pyloric stenosis and the prospects of healing after Weber-Ramstedt surgery PhD. In Innsbruck Wessing became an active member of the Catholic student association K.St.V. Rhenania Innsbruck in the KV .

He then conducted research on the method of fluorescence angiography, which had been largely rejected by experts as a "superfluous method", and completed his habilitation on this subject in 1968 with Gerhard Meyer-Schwickerath . He summarized his research results in the textbook and atlas fluorescence angiography of the retina , which has been translated into several languages.

In 1971 Wessing was appointed as an adjunct professor at the Ruhr University in Bochum , from 1974 to 1978 he headed the retinology department of the eye clinic at the University of Tübingen and was director of the Essen eye clinic from 1978 to 1996, and since 1985 as the successor to his teacher Meyer-Schwickerath. The International Symposium on Fluorescence Angiography, first organized by Wessing for the first time, has been held in Baden-Baden since 1985 .
