Adams is a settlement ( town ) in Jefferson County in the US state of New York . At the 2010 census, the settlement had 5,143 inhabitants on 109.5 km². The town was named after the 2nd President of the USA, John Adams , whose term of office ended in 1801, one year before the town was founded.
The main town of the town is the village of Adams, founded around 1800 on North Sandy Creek; about a third of all residents of the town live there (1775 inhabitants, as of 2010). To the north there is a second settlement center, the village of Adams Center, founded around 1816, with almost 1600 inhabitants (as of 2010).
geography
Adams lies in a ground moraine area and is therefore largely flat. The originally thick forest has given way to heavy agricultural use in many areas. There are no significant elevations. The two main watercourses are the North Sandy Creek and Stony Creek , which both drain in a northerly direction into the St. Lawrence River.

history
The history of the town before the arrival of the first colonists is largely in the dark due to the lack of written records. It is known that when the first settlers arrived, today's town was in the northern part of the hunting area of the Oneida , one of the Iroquois tribes .
The settlement began with the division of the land into administrative units; Originally, the state of New York comprised the entire, as yet undiscovered country in the western United States and was increasingly divided into smaller administrative units. So Adams emerged from the area of the town of Whitestown , from which the district of Mexico (now Oswego County ) was spun off in 1792 , which then comprised the entire present-day Jefferson County and large parts of Oswego County. Before the town was formally founded, the land was divided into eleven areas, the so-called Eleven Towns or the Black River Tract (after its location on the Black River ). Adams was formed on April 1, 1802 from areas 7 ( Aleppo ) and 8 ( Orpheus ). Both areas had been sold to land traders in 1796 and divided into sections that were then sold to settlers. In preparation for the settlement, the first clearing of the forest was carried out in May 1800 and a first grain mill was built in 1801 or 1802. The first settlement took place on August 20, 1802, the first school was built in 1803.
On March 1, 1803, the constituent city assembly took place; Another meeting on March 10, 1803 decided the separation of Rodman along the border of Tract 7 and 8. Such divisions were made in the early days of the settlement in order to simplify the administration of the populated areas and to keep the distances short. Rodmans split off on March 24, 1804. After that, the area of the town did not change.
The first settlement center, Adams Village, was created as part of the initial settlement. The administration of the town was settled here and the first shops were opened here. From 1816 another settlement center was built a little north, Adams Center, at that time still under the name Adams Five Corners. Adams Village, which was given its own administration on November 11, 1851, remained more important. At that time it had a post office and a daily stagecoach service to Belleville , Henderson and Worth . The rail connection through the Rome, Watertown and Ogdensburg Railroad (RW&O) was, however, led to Adams Center in 1852. As a result, factories were set up in both settlements that processed and packaged agricultural products, such as a machine shop and a cheese dairy (1864), a malt house (1876) and a canning factory (1889).
On April 22, 1853, the Adams Collegiate Institute (between March 24, 1864 and November 16, 1883: Hungerford Collegiate Institute after a major donor, General Solon D. Hungerford) was founded in Adams Village , the forerunner of today's South Jefferson High School was. It served as a preparatory school for college and university students.
There was no fighting here or in the area during the Civil War , but townspeople served in the 67th New York State Volunteer Regiment. Due to the lack of large-scale industry and the focus on agricultural products, the town was not significantly influenced by the industrialization phase of the United States, the First World War or the Great Depression. Contrary to the general trend, there was no escape from the city in the years after the Second World War, as can be seen from the steadily increasing population.
religion
The first churches in Adams were in Presbyterian (1827), Baptist (1846), and Episcopal (1849) congregations. Today (as of 2020) there is also a Roman Catholic parish and a parish of the Assembly of God in the village.
