Admiral Sir Cloudesley Shovell is an English rock band from Hastings formed in 2008.

history

The three-piece band was formed in 2008. The group initially played covers in various local pubs . A short time later the group began to write their own compositions, which resulted in a first demo . This made Lee Dorrian aware of the group, whereupon he signed them to his label Rise Above Records . After a first EP in 2010 under the name Return to Zero , the albums Don't Hear It… Fear It! Followed every two years from 2012 onwards . , Check 'Em Before You Wreck' Em and Keep It Greasy! . During this time, the group was also active live, so they were represented at the Roadburn Festival in 2012, 2015 and 2016 . In March 2015 they also went on a European tour with Danko Jones . In November 2018, three more performances were held in the UK with this band. These were part of another tour by Danko Jones through Europe, in which Prima Donna also took part. In 2019 the album Very Uncertain Times was released , which was recorded in Broadoak Studios in Sussex under the direction of Harvey Summers . This was the first release that the Australian Serra Petale can be heard as the new drummer.

style

Andreas Himmelstein from Rock Hard wrote in his review of Don't Hear It… Fear It! that "[e] in-going choruses and tight arrangements " are neglected in favor of "a noisy dynamic", which results in "a nasty pissed off mix of seventies heroes like Atomic Rooster , Epitaph , Budgie and Grand Funk Railroad chased through the fuzzbox ". In addition, be Doom Metal riffs in the style of Black Sabbath and "fleet Led Zeppelin - Grooves " present. Björn Thorsten Jaschinski described the album in the same issue as "earthy retro music, but with a hyperactive lead guitar in a scruffy coat, cramped to an angle". The singing has an aggressive character. Thomas Kupfer stated in his review of Check 'Em Before You Wreck' Em that the appearance of the group reminded him of Budgie. Musically, the band not only make use of “retro classic rock and the usual stoner influences (the former less, the latter more)”, but also sprinkle “ Psychedelic Fuzz” in the style of Hawkwind and elements from MC5 and Blue Cheer . Thorsten Dörting presented at Keep It Greasy! uninspired proto- metal in the style of MC5 and Sir Lord Baltimore . However, the music is hardly memorable even after several runs. Thomas Kupfer believed he recognized in his review of Very Uncertain Times that the band used rock from the 1970s as well as stoner, garage and psychedelic rock. The songs would have the character of a jam session with a corresponding lo-fi production. Overall, he described the music as a mix of MC5, Hawkwind and Blue Cheer. In an interview with Alexandra Michels in the same issue, Johnny Gorilla stated that the title, detached from politics and religion, refers to the uncertain times, especially in the past few years and especially in Great Britain. Jens Kirsch from Ox-Fanzine found that Very Uncertain Times has a massive retro sound inherent in it. Above all the guitar stands out "with sprawling solos ". All in all, it was possible to bring the zeitgeist of the early 1970s into the present.
