Adolf Burkhardt (pastor)
Adolf Burkhardt (born April 10, 1929 in Asperg , Baden-Württemberg ; † April 2, 2004 in Weilheim an der Teck , Baden-Württemberg) was a Lutheran pastor who became known for his commitment to Esperanto and ecumenism .
Adolf Burkhardt, son of a postal worker, lost his father in World War II. After graduating from high school in Urach in 1950 and studying at Elmhurst College in the US state of Illinois , he completed a degree in theology in Tübingen . From 1961 to 1971 he was pastor in Gechingen and from 1972 until his retirement in 1991 in Bissingen an der Teck .
From 1961 to 1975 and from 1981 to 2000 he was chairman of the International Christian Esperanto Federation . In this function he was one of the initiators of the first Ecumenical Esperanto Congress in 1968 in Limburg an der Lahn . In 1967 he began building the German Esperanto Library in the Protestant rectory in Gechingen , which is now in Aalen .
Together with the Catholic clergy Bernhard Eichkorn and Albrecht Kronenberger , he wrote the ecumenical worship book Adoru in Esperanto , which appeared in 2001 with a total of 1,472 pages.
For his commitment to Esperanto, international understanding and ecumenism, he was awarded the Federal Cross of Merit on ribbon in 1992 .
