He attended the Gröning high school in Stargard and Dramburg and the provincial trade school in Stettin. In 1877/78 he did his military service in the fortress artillery in Sønderborg (now Denmark ). He then worked as a rural accountant and office secretary near Berlin . There he met Rudolf Virchow , a former friend of his father's, through whom he got in touch with the Berlin Anthropological Society .

There he met Hugo Lemcke , who invited him to the nearby archaeological research area of the Bronze Age burial ground . Lemcke offered him the position of curator in the museum of the Society for Pomeranian History and Archeology , which he took over in 1890. His task was to organize and catalog the rich collections of finds and artifacts that had been stored in the Bogislaw building of the Szczecin Palace . His most important concerns were the professional storage and restoration as well as the expansion of the collection of monuments for the entire cultural history of the province of Pomerania . In this phase of the work he was able to increase the museum's holdings tenfold. However, he did not succeed in making the antiquity museum accessible to the public before it was handed over to the newly opened Museum of the City of Stettin on the hook terrace on June 23, 1913.
