Viktor von Alten (General, 1755)

Adolf Viktor Christian Jobst von Alten (born November 2, 1755 in Burgwedel , † August 23, 1820 in Osnabrück ) was a Hanoverian lieutenant general .

Life

origin

His parents were August Eberhard von Alten (1722–1789) and his wife, Henriette Philippine Marie Hedwig, née Freiin von Vincke-Ostenwalde . His father was lord of Wilkenburg and Sundern, head captain in Burgwedel and court and chancellery. He had four other brothers, including General Carl von Alten from Hanover .

Military career

Alten joined the 2nd Infantry Regiment of the Electorate of Hanover in April 1770 and on August 5, 1774 became a second lieutenant in the life guard . On November 15, 1783 he was Rittmeister there , advanced to major on July 23, 1794 , before he was transferred to the 4th Cavalry Regiment as a lieutenant colonel on December 3, 1802 . After the occupation of Hanover by the French and the Artlenburg Convention , Alten joined the King's German Legion on November 15, 1803, like many officers . There he was appointed colonel and commander of the 2nd Hussar Regiment on December 19, 1804 . On July 25, 1810, he was made major general and, as such , was seriously wounded in the Battle of Salamanca on July 22, 1812.

After the end of the coalition wars , the Legion returned to Hanoverian service and on March 1, 1816 Alten was appointed commander of the 3rd Cavalry Brigade. He was promoted to lieutenant general on April 16, 1818, before he died on August 23, 1820 in Osnabrück as a colonel of the 2nd Hussar Regiment.

He had been in command of the Guelph Order since 1816 .

family

Alten married Charlotte Freiin von Kinsky and Tettau (1775–1842) on April 24, 1796 . The couple had several children:
