Adolf Wahrmund (born June 10, 1827 in Wiesbaden , † May 15, 1913 in Vienna ) was a German orientalist and writer.

Life

Adolf Wahrmund came from a very simple background. With the support of generous scholarships, he was able to attend and study at the grammar school in Wiesbaden. In Göttingen he took philosophy and theology . He later moved to the University of Vienna and studied Classical and Oriental Philology .

During this time, Wahrmund financed his living as a private tutor. From 1853 to 1861 he worked as a collaborator at the court library in Vienna. In the following year he was appointed lecturer in oriental languages ( Arabic , Persian , Turkish ) at the University of Vienna.

From 1870, Wahrmund also worked as a lecturer at the Imperial and Royal Oriental Academy . Between 1885 and 1897 he was entrusted with the management of the academy. He was also appointed full professor. According to his own statements, Wahrmund also wrote plays ( battle for Vienna ) and poetry ( fables , parables and poems of the times) "... for relaxation ..." .

The lawyer Ludwig Wahrmund is his son.

On May 15, 1913, Adolf Wahrmund died in Vienna at the age of 85.

Anti-Semitism in Wahrmund's Works

Adolf Wahrmund discredited his scientific claim with his anti-Semitic , political and pseudoscientific publication The Law of Nomadism and Today's Jewish Rule, first published in 1887 . In this book he assumes the Semitic peoples (e.g. Arabs , Jews ) that they are not able to achieve a community, cultural and technical achievements and therefore have to live parasitically on other non-Semitic peoples. Therefore the Jews should be expelled from Europe . Precisely because his inflammatory pamphlet appeared a second time in 1919, he became one of the most visible representatives of the many recognized university professors of the 19th and 20th centuries, who, against the better knowledge of their time, were the decisive intellectual pioneers of pseudo- scientifically founded anti-Semitism and anti-Gypsyism on the one hand and the superiority claim of the occidental culture on the other hand.
