Adolf Friedrich Matthias von Elern (born October 10, 1791 in Schwerin , † May 16, 1859 in Lüneburg ) was a Hanover major general and commander of Lüneburg.

Life

Adolf was a son of the Mecklenburg-Schwerin officer Karl von Elern (1768–1802), his wife Maria Margarethe, born von Bülow (1769–1841), a daughter of Colonel Emanuel Friedrich von Bülow († 1789) from the Möderitz family.

Military career

Elern came in 1813 from the Mecklenburg Grenadier Guard as a lieutenant in the Bremen and Verden battalion. There he was appointed captain on April 15, 1814. As such, he came on March 1, 1816 in the 6th Infantry Regiment and on July 1, 1833 in the 6th Line Battalion. On January 1, 1837, he was a major in the 2nd light battalion, where he was promoted to lieutenant colonel on November 8, 1840 . The following year he was transferred to the 6th Infantry Regiment. From there he came in 1844 as a commander in the 2nd light battalion, from where he came in 1846 in the 4th Infantry Regiment. There he was appointed commander in 1848 and promoted to colonel on August 31, 1849 . He retired on May 23, 1851 and was transferred to Lüneburg as commandant. There he was promoted to major general in the Hanoverian army in 1855 .

During the Wars of Liberation he fought against the French in the campaigns of 1813 and 1814 in northern Germany, as well as during the summer campaign of 1815 at Belle Alliance . He also fought in the first Schleswig War in 1848 .

He was the holder of the Knight's Cross of the Guelph Order , the Waterloo Medal , the Wilhelms Cross , the war commemorative coin from 1813 , the Mecklenburg-Schwerin war commemorative coin and the Hanseatic Medal of Honor .

Elern married Agnes von dem Knesebeck (1802–1888). The couple had several children:
