Julius von Elern

Julius August Andreas von Elern (born April 18, 1824 in Stade ; † July 30, 1903 in Lübeck ) was a Prussian major general and commander of Diedenhofen .

Life

Julius was a son of the Hanoverian major general and commander of Lüneburg Adolf von Elern (1791-1859) and his wife Agnes, born von dem Knesebeck (1802-1888).

Military career

After attending grammar school in Stade, Elern joined the guards regiment of the Hanover Army as a cadet on October 25, 1841 and was promoted to secondary lieutenant by the end of January 1842 . For further training, he completed the military academy in Hanover from October 1846 to May 1847 , rose to prime lieutenant in early October 1848 and continued his training at the General Staff Academy from mid-October 1849 . After a command to survey the country, Elern returned to his regular regiment at the beginning of November 1852 when he was appointed regimental adjutant. On May 22, 1856 he was promoted to captain and at the end of May 1858 he was transferred to the 6th Infantry Regiment as a company commander. In this capacity, Eler took part in the war against Denmark in 1864 and in the battle of Langensalza during the war against Prussia in 1866 . After the lost war and the annexation of the kingdom , Elern joined the Prussian army on March 9, 1867 . He was aggregated as captain and company commander of the 3rd Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 29 and promoted to major at the end of June 1867 . After he had been assigned to the regiment on March 22, 1868, Elern was appointed commander of the 1st battalion in Trier on August 10, 1868 .

During the war against France he was badly wounded in the Battle of Gravelotte . After his recovery, he took part in the fighting at Buchy , Amiens and the Hallue and the sieges of Metz and Péronne . Awarded both classes of the Iron Cross , Elern rose to colonel after the peace treaty until mid-September 1874 and was briefly commanded to lead the 6th Rhenish Infantry Regiment 68 on August 15, 1874 . On November 12, 1874, he was appointed commander of the 3rd Rhenish Infantry Regiment No. 29. In position à la suite of his regiment, Elern was transferred to Diedenhofen on September 17, 1878 as commander. In this capacity, he was awarded the Crown Order II. Class on the occasion of the Order's festival in January 1881 and the character of Major General on March 30, 1881 . Under awarded the Red Eagle , he was on 10 June 1882 II. Class with oak board for disposition made. He died on July 30, 1903 in Lübeck.

Elern married Ernestine von Ahlefeld (1839–1922) on November 13, 1861 in Olpenitz . The couple had several children:

  • Detlef (* 1871), Rector of the Latin School in Osnabrück
