Adolph Friedrich Balemann (born May 3, 1806 in Reinfeld , † June 2, 1876 in Oldenburg in Holstein ) was a German pastor and provost.

Live and act

Adolph Friedrich Balemann was the son of a pastor of the same name and his second wife Catharina Elisabeth Hoyer (born April 24, 1767 in Süderau ; † April 25, 1835 in Reinfeld). He had four older brothers, including Georg Ludwig Balemann and three older sisters as well as two half-brothers from his father's first marriage.

After attending the Rendsburg School of Academics for a year and a half, Balemann studied theology at Kiel University in 1826/27 . His teachers included August Twesten , Niels Nikolaus Falck , Pfaff and his cousin Justus Olshausen . From 1827 to 1829 he continued his studies in Berlin and heard from August Neander and Friedrich Schleiermacher , among others . In 1829 he moved back to Kiel University. On Michaelmas 1830 he passed the theological exam in Glückstadt and received the “2. Character with praiseworthy distinction ”.

In December 1834 Baleman was appointed adjunct of the Nikolaikirche in Kiel . His inauguration took place on March 29, 1835, shortly before Claus Harms began his service as the main pastor and provost at the church. Balemann and Harms had a close relationship. Harms unsuccessfully suggested that Balemann should take over the archdeaconate as his successor.

In 1838 Balemann was elected archdeacon in Tondern . He started the poorly paid job on May 6, 1838. The new job offered him the opportunity to marry Sophia Magdalena Harms (born October 13, 1815 in Lunden ; † August 18, 1856 in Oldenburg) on December 7 of the same year in Kiel . His wife, with whom he had three daughters, was a daughter of Claus Harms and his wife Magdalena, née Jürgens.

Baleman then applied for better paid positions several times without success. On October 3, 1843, he became chief pastor and provost in Oldenburg in Holstein. The inauguration took place on January 7, 1844. Balemann, who had already been interested in public life during his studies, was also politically active in Oldenburg: in 1849 he signed addresses and petitions in favor of the Schleswig-Holstein survey . When the Danish king confirmed him in office on January 12, 1853, when he restored Danish sovereignty over the Duchy of Holstein , he gave him a reprimand. Balemann nevertheless continued his political activities: in 1854 he moved into the Holstein Estates Assembly as the Estates deputy for the 5th religious electoral district . In 1858 he refused to run again.

In September 1871 Balemann suffered a stroke and for this reason could no longer work as a pastor. On September 1, 1874, he resigned from the post of provost. With his death two years later he died as the last male member of the previously widespread and renowned family of the Balemanns.

Honors

In 1860 Balemann was awarded the Knight's Cross of the Dannebrog Order . Since 1869 he was a bearer of the Prussian Order of the Crown, 3rd class.
