Adonia (youth organization)
Adonia is a Christian youth organization that organizes summer camps and camps for musicals and sports. In addition, a toy and book mail order business and a music publisher are operated. The name "Adonia" is Hebrew (אֲדֹנִיָּ֣ה) and means "my Lord is YHWH " (see Adonija ).
Adonia Switzerland
Adonia was founded in Switzerland in 1979 by Markus Hottiger , who gave Sunday school in his free church . When he started singing with children, he noticed their enthusiasm for it. He started writing songs himself and had weekly rehearsals . Later he started organizing singing camps for teenagers (young people aged 13 to 20). The movement grew continuously. In 1990 the first junior camps (children between the ages of 9 and 13) were added. Family camps (aged 7 to 99) were also offered later.
Over 40 musical camps with more than 2500 participants take place in German-speaking Switzerland every year. The individual teenage choirs give four concerts each , the children's choirs and the family choirs two. With over 1000 singers, the choirs at the final concerts of the teenage camps are among the largest youth choirs in the world.
Sports camps have also been organized since 2006 . In which 3-4 camps start parallel to each other and from Wednesday compete against each other in the sports of football, floorball and volleyball.
In 2011, the French-speaking work began in western Switzerland with a teens choir.
The association is financed through camp contributions, donations , gifts and bequests . Adonia Verlag produces musicals , song productions, radio plays, children's books, Christmas musicals , school musicals and learning CDs. Adonia offers courses on various topics, including "Singing with Kids & Teens", musical workshops, piano workshops, PA technology, ventriloquism.
In February 2016, Adonia had around thirteen full-time employees and a few interns .
Adonia Germany
Markus Heusser brought Adonia to Germany from Switzerland in 2001. In 2004 Adonia eV was founded, based in Karlsruhe . However, there is still a lively cooperation between Adonia Switzerland and Adonia Germany. Markus Heusser, who worked as a musician at Adonia Switzerland from 1996 to 2004, heads Adonia Germany. The first teens musical camps were held in Baden-Württemberg . But already in 2003 there were the first camps in Rhineland-Palatinate and Lower Saxony . Adonia's musical-Christian work grew quickly and Adonia is now active in all federal states. At the Adonia Basis, 15 people are employed full-time and 4 people in the FSJ for 1 year each.
In 2021 there will be 48 musical camps across Germany with around 3300 participants for teens (12-19 years). Adonia also offers 24 musical camps for children aged 9-12 with around 1700 participants. A total of 72 project choirs are on the way to more than 240 performances and 5000 participants across Germany.
Adonia Portugal
Adonia Portugal started its work in 2004. Its first camp took place in 2005 in Esmoriz. The Portuguese association "Adonia - Associação" was founded on February 17th, 2005. The association is based in Palmela . The Swiss Rolf Graf is the director and managing director.
