Adrar des Ifoghas , also Adrar des Iforas , Ifoghas Mountains , ( Tifinagh : ⴰⴷⵔⴰⵔ ⵏ ⵉⴼⵓⵖⴰⵙ, Arabic أدرار إيفوغاس) is a 250,000 square kilometer mountain range in the Sahara . It is located in the northeast of Mali in the Kidal region and, to a lesser extent, in the Algerian provinces of Adrar and Tamanrasset . With Aïr , Ahaggar and Tibesti , it is one of the most important mountain ranges in the Sahara.

The Adrar des Ifoghas consists mainly of sandstone . There is water in several Gueltas .
Surname
The Berber word adrar means mountain. Ifogha is the name of a rich and influential Tuareg family, the Kel Ifoghas , nomads who lived in the area for a long time. In a broader sense, “Ifoghas” refers to all Tuareg in the region. They are traditionally nomads who raise camels, cattle and sheep. The name of the Mauritanian Adrar Plateau goes back to the same word.

The Adrar des Ifoghas is rich in Neolithic rock art and cave paintings .

The largest settlement is Kidal , capital of the Kidal region named after it . Other settlements are Tessalit , Boughessa , Essouk , Télabit , Abeïbara in the center of the region and Adjelhoc .
