Adrien Backscheider (born August 7, 1992 in Metz ) is a French cross-country skier .

Career

Backscheider competed in junior races until 2012. He finished first in the U20 overall ranking of the Alpine Cup in the 2011/12 season . In the 2012/13 season he started mainly in the Alpine Cup and finished seventh in the overall ranking. He ran his first World Cup race in mid-January 2013 in La Clusaz , which he finished in 35th place in the 15 km mass start. In March 2013 he came on the podium for the first time in the Alpine Cup with third place in the 30 km mass start race in Campo Carlo Magno . After 69th place in the Nordic Opening in Kuusamo at the beginning of the following season, he won in Davos with the 26th place over 30 km Freestyle his first World Cup points. At the U23 World Championships in 2014 in Val di Fiemme , he won gold in the skiathlon . He became French champion in the 15 km mass start race in 2014. At the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi , he finished 43rd over 15 km classic. At the end of the season he won his first Alpine Cup victory in the 30 km mass start race in Rogla and was 18th in the World Cup final in Falun . In January 2015 he won the 15 km freestyle in Oberwiesenthal again in the Alpine Cup. In the following month he won bronze at the U23 World Championships in 2015 in Almaty in the 15 km freestyle and at the Nordic World Ski Championships in Falun 2015 bronze with the relay and finished 19th in the skiathlon. In the 2015/16 season he came in 49th place at the Nordic Opening in Ruka and 34th place in the 2016 Tour de Ski . In March 2016 he took second place in the 30 km mass start race at the Alpencup on the Großer Arber . In the 2016/17 season he finished 60th in the World Cup mini tour in Lillehammer and 34th in the World Cup final in Québec . In the Alpine Cup he achieved 11th place overall. He won his third victory in St. Ulrich am Pillersee and also came third twice. In January 2018 he won the Marathon de Bessans . The following month he won the bronze medal with the relay at the Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang and also achieved 17th place over 15 km freestyle

In the 2018/19 season Backscheider took 19th place in the Lillehammer Triple, 25th place in the Tour de Ski 2018/19 and 23rd place in the World Cup finals in Québec, and at the end of the season he finished 39th in the overall World Cup. At the beginning of February 2019 he won the 50 km freestyle at the König Ludwig Run . At the season highlight, the Nordic World Ski Championships 2019 in Seefeld in Tyrol , he won the bronze medal with the relay. He was also ninth in the 50 km mass start race and eighth in the skiathlon . In the following season he achieved 49th place in the Ruka Triple and 19th place in the Tour de Ski 2019/20 , 32nd place in the overall World Cup.
